Divine Discontent: How to Navigate Your Soul's Invitation to Grow
Move through discomfort to honor your deeper purpose
As mission driven healers, empaths, and lightworkers, our path to awakening often begins with a crisis of vision or identity. We may know that the old ways we are living no longer work for us, such as a job that feels stifling or a stale relationship. And yet we don’t see what is next, or how to move forward into our true passions in alignment with our soul’s calling.
Our lives may be ”fine” by usual standards. For example, we may value our ability to pay our bills, live in a nice part of town, have the “right” partner, afford creature comforts, and so on. However, there is a deeper soul longing beyond where these outer trappings reach. This inner yearning reminds us in subtle (or not so subtle) ways that there must be more to life. At a core level we seek a new way to be, and this leads us on a path of discovery.
Honor the discomfort
While not a favorite emotion, there can be a great gift in what I will call “Divine Discontent”. This is the voice of our inner being that won’t settle for a mediocre life. This is the part of us that reminds us that there is a deeper reason we have come here at this time of human evolution. We have within us something unique and powerful that is needed at this time. It is our responsibility and honor to uncover the gold that lies within our hearts.
We don’t need to struggle to see the good within. We do need to have the courage to look, however, at which parts of our lives support us in expressing our unique beauty, and which parts simply distract us or take us off course. We can then honor the voice that leads us back to the path of our heart’s true wisdom and calling.
Crisis of Vision Leads to New Possibilities
I had my first crisis of vision at the age of 14, when my life in a strict orthodox home no longer made sense to me. I felt powerless and hopeless. I asked for a therapist, to help me move from despair to a path forward. We worked together to define a trajectory for my life that would align with my true being.
This experience, of walking through the darkness of uncertainty and mapping a way forward, has helped me build a life of true integrity. By that I mean, in alignment with my soul’s purpose and gifts.
While despair is not my go to emotion, these pivotal moments of inner crisis, when nothing around make sense anymore, often are just the doorways our souls need to move us to a new, more aligned direction for our lives.
Consider the path of your own major leaps in life. When on a journey of a major life transition or identity crisis, we start to see rays of hope. As in my case, someone enters our life at just the right time and offers us a glimpse into a new chapter or reality. We may receive a path to healing, or receive a treatment that brings us to a new sense of who we are, and who we can be. Or we may stumble onto a new spiritual practice or modality that ignites inner healing. These gifts help us see a doorway forward.
Giving Back: The Circle Completes
After we integrate the gifts we have received, we often start to want to give back. For me, my gratitude for my therapist extended to my choice to study psychology when I went to college. I wanted to share what my therapist had so graciously offered to me - a listening ear and heart and support to create a new life.
What I have learned in my journey through several career pivots and life explorations is that my love of “counseling” others can take many forms and expressions. For example, as a spiritual life coach, I gently work with coachees to remind them of their magnificent potential and gifts. As a life path teacher, I build curricula that inspires students to glimpse their own worth and inner magic.
I have brought forth the essence of what I have gained from my therapist - a gentle and listening heart along with the encouragement to stay the course and map one’s own future. I offer these same gifts to all those who come to me during their crises of vision. I offer a generative heart, and the reminder that these crises can lead us to new and more authentic expressions of our true beings.
